Frequently Asked Questions

Registering and Logging In

How do I start using Talk4TV?
Talk4TV is a free service for subscribers of Net4TV's Games4TV. If you're an active Games4TV member and you have already activated your Talk4TV account, just log in with the same Member ID and Password as you use for the games. Or, just go to the Games4TV Home page, log in there, and then click the menu link for Talk4TV.

Can I use Talk4TV without registering or activating?
You're welcome to read the public forums, even if you're not a member. But in order to post in the forums, use Private Messaging (like mail among members), or create a Member Profile, you'll need to become a Talk4TV member. If you'd like to play in our Game Challenges, you'll also need to join (or if you're already a Games4TV member, activate your Talk4TV) because you'll use Private Messaging to report the scores. Activating Talk4TV also activates your Net4TV Guides membership as well.
Top

I haven't activated Talk4TV yet. How do I do that?
Go to the Games4TV Home page, make sure you're logged in (it will show your member name at the top), and then click the menu link to Activate Your Talk4TV. That will take you to the forum to activate. The Talk4TV membership is free, but you must agree to the additional Terms of Service (TOS). After you've read the TOS, scroll to the bottom and check the "I Agree" box and then press the button to activate your membership.
Top

Why was I not logged in automatically?
Normally, if you come through the Games4TV front page, you'll be logged into everything automatically by the Games4TV membership system. But because Talk4TV and Games4TV actually are different systems, if you come here first you may still be logged out. You can click the link to log in or, even easier, press the Games4TV logo at the top of the page to go to the Games4TV front page, then press the Talk4TV link from the menu and you'll be back here, logged in.

Reading and Navigating the Forums

How to Find the Forum You Want
Our new Talk4TV forums are a bit different from our old ones. Forums contain groups of topics, and now they also can have more forums (sub-forums) inside of them. Just click on a forum to see the topics (or sub-forums) in it. Also, when you are in a forum, you'll have a "Jump to:" control at the bottom of the page, which contains a menu of all of the forums and sub-forums in its drop-down list. You also can use the Search link on the menu if you are looking for a particular subject.

Can you make the type bigger?
You can do it! Look up in the upper left corner, and you'll see an A with little arrows. That will let you try different 3 sizes of of type. When you find the one that is best for you, just leave it that way.
Top

Is there a way to bookmark a topic I want to come back to?
There is! When you are reading a topic, there will be a link in the bottom menu that says Bookmark topic. Click that link, and it will be saved in your Talk4TV Bookmarks, which you can find in your User Control Panel. You can delete a bookmark for a topic either from the Remove from bookmarks at the bottom of the topic, or from the User Control Panel.

Posting in the Forums

How do I reply to a topic?
Each topic that isn't locked will have buttons that say POSTREPLY at the top and bottom of the page. When you click the button, a posting form will open. Type your post, press Preview to see what it will look like, change whatever you would like and, when you are happy with it, press Submit to post it. Your post will be at the end of the topic.
Top

How do I reply to a specific post?
You can use the [quote] button in the upper right corner of a post to open a posting form with the post quoted. That can make it clear what you are replying to. If the post is long and you just want to reply or comment about a portion of it, you can edit out the parts that aren't relevant between the [quote] and [/quote] tags. But sure to preview before you submit to make sure you did it right.
Top

How do I post a new topic in a forum?
To post a new topic in a forum, click NEWTOPIC button at the top left next to the forum's search box. Before you post, please check and make sure that you've chosen a forum that is suitable for your topic. If you have any questions, ask a moderator. If you realize after you post it that there might be a better forum for your topic, ask a moderator to move it for you.
Top

How do I edit or delete a post?
You can only edit or delete your own posts, and only within the first 48 hours after you post them. You also can't delete one of your posts once someone has replied to it. If you can still edit your post, there will be an edit button in the upper right-hand corner of the post body. If you need to edit or delete a post and you no longer can, ask a moderator to do it for you.
Top

What does Save Draft mean on the posting form?
This allows you to save partially-finished posts to be completed and submitted at a later date. To reload a draft, visit the User Control Panel. But be cautious -- the drafts are attached to the topic where you started them, so if it is deleted, your draft will be, too.
Top

How do I add a signature to my post?
You can create your signature in your User Control Panel. Once you've created it, you can attach it by default to all your posts by using the radio button in your profile, or if you prefer, you can attach it only to the posts you want by checking "add signature" in the posting form.

What are Smilies?
Smilies, or Emoticons, are small images which can be used to express a feeling using a short code, e.g. :) denotes happy, while :( denotes sad. The full list of emoticons can be seen in the posting form. Try not to overuse smilies, however, as they can quickly render a post unreadable and a moderator may edit them out or remove the post altogether. You are limited to no more than 10 smileys in a post

Can I post images?
Yes, images can be shown in your posts. you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g. http://www.example.com/my-picture.gif. Your User Control Panel & Private Messaging

What is the User Control Panel (UCP)?
This is where you can find your Bookmarks and Drafts, your Private Messages, and your Member Profile. Just touch the tabs to go to each control area in the UCP.
Top

How do I send a Private Message?
Go to your Private Messages panel and compose a message, just as you would a forum post. There is a Subject field that must be filled in, whether you are going to send your message or save it as a draft. To send the message, put the user name of the member in the field at the top. If you want to send your message to multiple members, type their member name in the box, one on each line, and then press the [Add] button to include them in the addressees. You can send a Private Message to all of the Administrators, or to any Group of which you are a member. When you are ready to send (Preview first), press the [Submit] button to send it. You will see that the message has been added to your Outbox number. It will be there until the recipient opens it, and then it will be in your Sent messages box.
Top

Someone sent me a message. How do I reply?
Above the message, you'll see a button labeled "Send Reply." Just click on that to open the posting form, with your sender's name already filled in. By the way, you can add more addresses by entering their member names in the address box, one per line, and pressing "Add." If you want to remove any potential recipients before you send, there is an [X] box next to each name to remove it.
Top

How do I save Private Messages?
Select the message(s) you wish to save by checking the Mark box in your Inbox. Then, from the drop-down list at the bottom, select Move Marked to Saved messages. They will be moved from your inbox into the target folder.
Top

How many messages can I have?
You may have up to 200 messages in your Inbox, 200 in your Saved messages, and 200 in your Sent messages. You also may create up to 4 of your own folders, and you can have up to 200 messages in each of them. If you add messages to folders or boxes that are full, the oldest messages in the box will be removed to make room.
Top

How can I get my avatar in my posts and messages?
You can upload an avatar from your computer, or link one in from a hosting site like photobucket. Make sure that it is appropriate (see "appropriate posting" below), and that it is no larger than 100 pixels square and 60 Kb in size. If you need some help, ask a moderator or post and request help in the forums.

How to use BBCode in your posts and messages

What are all the controls above the posting form?
Administrators are members assigned with the highest level of control over the entire board. These members can control all facets of board operation, including setting permissions, banning users, creating usergroups or moderators, etc., dependent upon the board founder and what permissions he or she has given the other administrators. They may also have full moderator capabilities in all forums, depending on the settings put forth by the board founder.
Top

Where can I practice using BBCode, before I show it in my posts?
BBCode works in your Private Messages, and you can send PMs to yourself. You also can save the Private Messages in your drafts so that you can continue to edit them. Also, ask the moderators if there is a "playground" for learning BBCode. We'll set one up if our members would like it.
Top

Will my posts with BBCode look the same to everyone who views them?
The basic text formatting -- bold, italic, etc. -- and things like bulleted lists and quote boxes will pretty much work on everything. But not all fonts or effects will show up on every platform. Please remember that the #1 purpose of writing is to be read by other members. Decorative fonts and colors are fine for headlines and "spot" effects, but they can be very hard to read as an entire post. Our members are mostly "Boomers" and their parents, so please try to think readability first. Posts which are too hard on the eyes may be modified or hidden by a moderator.

Appropriate Content and Posting Rules

Can I post anything I'd like in Talk4TV?
Net4TV and Talk4TV is a friendly place that serves a very diverse community, and we try to make this a happy and welcoming place for all of our members. To do that, there are some topics that we don't post about here.
  • We don't discuss politics.
  • We don't discuss religion.
  • We don't make posts that put people down, even "in fun."
  • We don't post about controversial subjects meant to upset or inflame.
  • We don't post links to sites that deal in this sort of material.
This is what you agree to in our Talk4TV Terms of Service, but a reminder here is good. Please join us in keeping Talk4TV, Games4TV, and all of Net4TV a welcoming place for all of our members.
Top

Someone made a post which I think violates the guidelines.
Above each post next to the quote button, there is a small white triangle with an exclamation mark. That is a button that will report the post to the moderators. You'll have a field where you can tell us why you think it is inappropriate.
Top

What are Administrators and Moderators, and who are they?
The Administrators and Moderators are "the team" that keeps Talk4TV running smoothly (we hope). In many cases, we can fix things, we can answer your questions, and if you need help, we'll try to provide it. In the menu at the bottom of the forums pages, you'll see a link to The Team. That shows you who we are and gives you a link to contact any of us by PM.

Searching the Forums

How can I search a forum or forums?
Enter a search term in the search box located on the index, forum or topic pages. Advanced search can be accessed by clicking the “Advance Search” link which is available on all pages on the forum. How to access the search may depend on the style used.
Top

Why does my search return no results?
Your search was probably too vague and included many common terms which are not indexed by phpBB3. Be more specific and use the options available within Advanced search.
Top

Why does my search return a blank page!?
Your search returned too many results for the webserver to handle. Use “Advanced search” and be more specific in the terms used and forums that are to be searched.
Top

How do I search for members?
Visit to the “Members” page and click the “Find a member” link.
Top

How can I find my own posts and topics?
Your own posts can be retrieved either by clicking the “Search user’s posts” within the User Control Panel or via your own profile page. To search for your topics, use the Advanced search page and fill in the various options appropriately.
